Biden Struggles in Contentious Debate Amid Personal Attacks
Entering Thursday night’s debate, concerns about Joe Biden’s age and capability were widespread among Americans. Unfortunately for the President, his performance did little to alleviate those worries. With expectations set low, Biden still managed to falter, appearing lethargic, disjointed, and unclear.
Midway through the debate, Biden’s campaign informed reporters that the President was battling a cold, which was intended to explain his hoarse voice. While this might be true, it also seemed like an excuse for his lackluster showing.
Though Biden did manage to land a few hits on Donald Trump, he was mostly on the defensive. Early in the debate, some of his responses were baffling, such as his peculiar statement, “We finally beat Medicare,” referencing the government healthcare program for seniors.
Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s former communications director, didn’t mince words on CNN post-debate: “There’s no sugar-coating it, that was not a good debate for Joe Biden.” She pointed out that Biden needed to demonstrate energy and stamina, a goal he failed to achieve.
As the debate went on, Biden, like a boxer against the ropes, began swinging wildly at his opponent in an effort to shift the momentum. A few of these swings connected, provoking Trump into angry retorts. However, the focus on hot-button issues like the economy and immigration, where polls show Americans trust Trump more, only compounded Biden’s struggles.
“I don’t think he even knew what he was saying at the end of that sentence,” Trump quipped after one of Biden’s muddled responses, a line that encapsulated the evening.
A More Disciplined Trump
In contrast, Trump delivered a disciplined and agile performance, steering clear of the interruptions and aggression that marred his 2020 debate. He consistently redirected the conversation to criticize Biden’s record, despite frequently making unfounded claims and outright falsehoods, which Biden struggled to effectively counter.
On the topic of abortion, Trump deflected criticism by accusing Democrats of supporting extreme policies, falsely claiming they endorse abortions after birth. Despite abortion being a weak spot for Trump and Republicans post-Roe v. Wade, Biden’s counterattacks were ineffective.
“It’s been a terrible thing, what you’ve done,” Biden remarked, missing an opportunity to press his advantage.
A Fighter on the Defensive
Biden did manage to provoke Trump into heated exchanges at times. Notably, Biden referenced Trump’s conviction related to an alleged affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels, calling Trump’s morals into question. “I didn’t have sex with a porn star,” Trump retorted sharply.
Trump also appeared defensive regarding his actions during the January 6 Capitol riot. Attempting to deflect a question about his responsibility for the event, he aimed to criticize Biden’s record. This time, Biden held firm, accusing Trump of inciting the riot and doing nothing to stop it despite pleas from his aides.
What Comes Next?
This early debate, unprecedented in modern U.S. history, was scheduled by the Biden team to shift focus to Trump sooner in the campaign season. The hope was to remind voters of the tumultuous nature of Trump’s presidency. However, Biden’s lackluster performance has become the main talking point.
The Biden team may have anticipated a weak performance, choosing an early debate to allow more time for recovery. The Democrats’ convention in August offers an opportunity to present a polished vision of Biden’s second term. Additionally, another debate in September could leave a more recent impression on voters as the November election approaches.
Despite these strategies, Democrats might be uneasy, wondering if another debate with Trump will yield different results for Biden. Some may even be contemplating a different nominee for the August convention.
