Putin Praises ‘Brave’ Trump Following Election Win
In a recent event in Sochi, Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his congratulations to Donald Trump on his election victory, describing the former U.S. president as a “brave man.” Reflecting on Trump’s previous term, Putin noted that Trump had been “under attack from all sides” throughout his tenure in the White House.
Putin also addressed Trump’s proposal to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stating that Trump’s claims deserve consideration. During his campaign, Trump frequently asserted that he could end the war “in a day,” though he has yet to outline a concrete plan.
Putin’s extensive address covered multiple topics, including an attempted assassination against Trump in July, which he said left an “impression” on him. After the incident, Trump reportedly raised a clenched fist and mouthed “fight, fight, fight” before being escorted by Secret Service agents. “He handled himself admirably, with courage,” Putin commented.
When asked if he was willing to hold discussions with Trump, Putin replied, “We’re ready.” Trump, in an interview with NBC News, also expressed an openness to speak with Putin.
The Kremlin has previously been accused of meddling in the 2016 U.S. election to boost Trump’s chances against Hillary Clinton, a claim Moscow has always denied. A lengthy investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller found no evidence of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia.
Meanwhile, in Budapest, leaders at the European Political Community summit weighed in on Trump’s win. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described his recent conversation with the U.S. president-elect as “warm” and “productive.” However, many in Europe and Ukraine fear Trump might slow U.S. military aid to Kyiv after assuming office in January. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reassured Zelensky that the UK’s support for Ukraine remains “iron-clad.”
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a Trump ally, spoke on possible trade challenges between the U.S. and Europe, particularly given Trump’s proposed 10% tariff on imports. “Europe must take greater responsibility for its peace and security,” Orban remarked.
