Decorated Special Forces Soldier Identified in Cybertruck Explosion Outside Las Vegas Trump Hotel
Authorities have identified Matthew Alan Livelsberger, a 37-year-old active-duty US Special Forces soldier, as the driver involved in a Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas. Livelsberger, a native of Colorado Springs, Colorado, reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound moments before the vehicle detonated.
Incident Details
The dramatic explosion occurred on New Year’s Day when the rented Cybertruck, loaded with fuel canisters and firework mortars, burst into flames outside the hotel. Seven people sustained minor injuries in the incident. Authorities praised the Cybertruck’s structure, which they believe helped contain the blast, preventing significant outward damage. Remarkably, nearby glass doors and windows remained intact.
According to Las Vegas police, Livelsberger drove the Cybertruck from Denver, Colorado, where he had rented it on December 28. Surveillance and Tesla’s charging station data tracked his journey over 800 miles to Las Vegas. He arrived less than two hours before the explosion and parked near the hotel’s glass entrance. Smoke was observed before the vehicle erupted in flames.
Investigation and Identification
Sheriff Kevin McMahill confirmed that Livelsberger’s death was ruled a suicide, with the cause determined as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His body, burned beyond recognition, was identified through military tattoos and personal belongings found in the wreckage. Items recovered included a military ID, passport, credit cards, firearms, a smartphone, and a smartwatch.
While investigators continue to search for a motive, Sheriff McMahill stated, “This appears to be a suicide with a bombing that followed.” He assured the public there is no evidence of an ongoing threat.
Connections to Past Incidents
Authorities noted similarities between this incident and a 2019 truck attack in New Orleans that claimed 14 lives. Both involved former Fort Bragg soldiers who served in Afghanistan in 2009 and utilized the Turo rental service for their vehicles. However, no direct link between the two individuals has been established, and they are not believed to have served together.
Family and Background
Livelsberger was a decorated Special Forces Intelligence Sergeant with decades of military experience. He was stationed in Germany but on approved leave at the time of the incident. His father, speaking to CBS, revealed that Matthew had recently visited his wife and infant daughter in Colorado. He described their last conversation at Christmas as “normal,” with no indication of distress.
Public Reaction
The Las Vegas community remains shaken but reassured by officials that there is no lingering danger. Videos of the explosion circulating online show the burning Cybertruck, highlighting the intensity of the event.
Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward as they continue their investigation into this tragic and perplexing case.
