At Disney’s massive fan event, D23, held in California, a slew of new films were announced, including the official title for the third Avatar movie, additions to the Star Wars universe, and a much-anticipated sequel to Freaky Friday.
During Disney’s highly anticipated D23 fan convention, a series of major film announcements was made, thrilling the audience with news of upcoming releases. Among the highlights was filmmaker James Cameron revealing the official title of the third Avatar film: Avatar: Fire And Ash. Speaking to an audience of 12,000, Cameron teased that the new movie will be full of surprises and promised it would “not be what you expect.” He also shared that while it was too early to reveal any footage, attendees were treated to concept art featuring characters in dramatic, fiery sky settings. “Expect new cultures, creatures, and unexplored parts of Pandora,” Cameron hinted. The film is set to premiere on December 19, 2025, following the success of Avatar (2009) and its sequel Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).
Adding to the excitement, actor Jon Favreau provided a sneak peek into a new Star Wars film titled The Mandalorian and Grogu, with Pedro Pascal set to star. Production for this latest installment began just weeks ago, and it’s slated for a May 2026 release. Favreau declared, “We’re bringing Star Wars back to the big screen.”
The event also marked the reunion of Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, the beloved stars of the 2003 comedy Freaky Friday, who took the stage to promote the upcoming sequel, Freakier Friday, set for 2025. The duo received a standing ovation as they shared how meaningful it was to return to these characters. Curtis described the new film as “more fun and more emotional,” while Lohan added that working together again felt like “picking up from where we left off.” The sequel will also see the return of Chad Michael Murray and Mark Harmon, reprising their original roles. Fans got a glimpse of the upcoming film through images featuring Curtis with a silver bob driving Lohan in a convertible. In this new chapter, Lohan’s character, Anna Coleman, is now a mother herself.
Pixar also had big news, with chief creative officer Pete Docter confirming that The Incredibles 3 is in development, with Brad Bird returning as writer and director. Frozen fans were equally excited when director Jennifer Lee announced that two new Frozen films are on the way. “We still have questions from Frozen 2 that need answering,” Lee teased, explaining the need for two more movies, the first of which is expected in 2027.
Music fans were treated to a preview of a new song from the upcoming Lion King prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical genius behind Hamilton, composed the track titled I Always Wanted a Brother and shared his joy at collaborating with Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins on the project.
Finally, Toy Story fans had a special moment when Tom Hanks joined a panel with original creators from the 1995 film, reflecting on the journey of the beloved franchise. Hanks, who voices the iconic character Woody, shared memories from the early days, including a look at the original list of dialogue ideas, featuring his famous line, “there’s a snake in my boot.” A fourth Toy Story installment is expected to hit theaters in 2026.
The D23 event, which runs from August 9-11 at the Anaheim Convention Center, continues to be a celebration of Disney’s past, present, and future, offering fans an exclusive look at what’s to come.
