Man Arrested at US Capitol Checkpoint with Machete and Knives
A man was taken into custody at the US Capitol on Wednesday after authorities discovered he was carrying a machete and three knives while attempting to pass through a security checkpoint.
The Capitol Police reported that the weapons were initially detected when the machete showed up on an X-ray scan at the visitor center’s entrance. Upon further inspection of his belongings, officers found additional knives in his bag.
The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, now faces multiple charges related to the possession of dangerous weapons, according to an official statement.
This arrest unfolded just hours before President-elect Donald Trump arrived at the Capitol for a scheduled meeting with Senate Republicans. His visit also included a moment of tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, whose casket is currently on display in the Capitol Rotunda, a central space shared by the US House and Senate chambers.
Heightened security measures have been in place throughout the Capitol complex this week, following Monday’s congressional session to certify the 2024 presidential election results. These precautions aim to ensure the safety of lawmakers and visitors amid a period of increased activity in Washington, DC.
