Policewoman Killed, 10 Injured in Suspected Terror Attack in Southern Israel
A policewoman has tragically lost her life, and 10 others were injured in a shooting in Beersheba, a southern Israeli city, according to local officials. The assailant was shot and killed on-site by security forces, and authorities are treating the incident as a “suspected terror attack,” which took place at the city’s central bus station.
The fallen officer has been identified as 19-year-old Shira Chaya Suslik, a sergeant with Israel’s border police. Emergency services reported that they are currently treating ten individuals, some with gunshot wounds. One person is listed in “moderate to serious” condition, while four others are reported to be in “moderate” condition. All injured have been transported to Soroka Hospital, located nearby.
According to police, the gunman was “neutralized within seconds” by on-site security personnel. In response to the attack, Israel’s Transport Minister, Miri Regev, called for harsh measures against the families of those involved in terrorism, urging that they be deported from Israel. She emphasized the need for strong deterrents to prevent further attacks, voicing her thoughts on social media platform X.
Yair Lapid, leader of Israel’s opposition, condemned the attack, labeling it “severe and despicable” and called for intensified efforts to combat terrorism.
This incident follows another recent tragedy in Tel Aviv, where seven people lost their lives in a combined shooting and stabbing attack in the Jaffa district. Israeli security forces remain on heightened alert ahead of the approaching anniversary of Hamas’s assault on 7 October last year, which set off the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
