Trump Defends NYC Rally as 'Lovefest' Amid Backlash Over Comedian's Puerto Rico Joke
Donald Trump called his recent rally in New York City an “absolute lovefest,” downplaying calls from both parties for him to personally apologize after a comedian’s joke at the event sparked backlash. The rally, held at Madison Square Garden, included stand-up comic Tony Hinchcliffe, who during his routine referred to Puerto Rico as “an island of garbage,” a remark that offended many in the Puerto Rican community.
Trump, who is locked in a tight race with Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris, especially in the critical state of Pennsylvania, addressed the controversy in an interview with ABC News. He distanced himself from Hinchcliffe, saying he didn’t know the comedian and that “someone put him up there.” Despite the criticism, he insisted the event was filled with “love” and said it was an “honor to be involved.”
Meanwhile, Harris, in a bid to connect with Puerto Rican voters, presented a new policy platform to support Puerto Rico’s economy and strengthen disaster relief efforts. She accused Trump of neglecting the island during the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017, while the Trump campaign countered by emphasizing the funds allocated to rebuild Puerto Rican infrastructure.
Trump’s campaign trail continues in Pennsylvania, where he addressed a Puerto Rican voter on Tuesday, stating, “I think no president’s done more for Puerto Rico than I have.” As election day draws near, both candidates are intensifying their efforts to connect with Latino voters, who may prove crucial in key states.
